Newquay - the Surf Capital of the UK
The town of Newquay on the north coast of Cornwall is the subject of a bold 20-year investment plan that will transform its built environment and reconnect it with its greatest asset, the sea.
Two years in the making and called the Newquay Action Framework, the plan is already seen as a model for regenerating UK seaside towns through excellence in design and urban planning.
Jointly funded by the South West Regional Development Agency, Restormel Borough Council and English Partnerships, the Newquay Action Framework is a coherent plan for both the private and public sector to engage in Newquay's development as the Surf Capital of the UK.
It will reconnect Newquay with its stunning sea front by providing better access to the town's beaches, improve the quality of its buildings and retail centre, and create a variety of new public spaces, pedestrian areas and better transport links.
The Action Framework is being driven by the Surf Capital Steering Group, which includes a broad mix of public and private sector representatives and was established in June 2002.
The work of the group has already been recognised as a model for best practice by the Commission for the Built Environment, and has featured at a British Urban Regeneration Association conference on the regeneration of coastal towns.
The framework identifies a number of key development sites and opportunities in Newquay, and sets priorities for action. Each site has its own development brief drawn up in consultation with the local planning authority to guide private sector developers interested in being part of Newquay's renaissance.
On this site you'll find latest news, useful links and downloadable documents including the Newquay Action Framework, Development Briefs and the Newquay Vision document, which sets out in broad terms the background to the framework plan.
